Our units are designed for both indoor and outdoor use and are built to withstand the winter season. While they generally perform well, there’s always the possibility of unexpected issues. To help prevent your cold plunge tank from freezing, please follow these maintenance tips:
-
Clear Snow from Vents: If it snows, make sure to clear the snow away from the vents as soon as possible. The vents need to remain unobstructed for proper airflow.
-
Keep the Unit Plugged In: Ensure your unit is plugged in and running 24/7. Continuous water flow helps prevent the water from freezing.
-
Use the Lid When Not in Use: Keep the lid on the unit when it’s not in use. The lid helps seal the tank, isolating the water from outdoor temperatures. Our tanks are highly insulated, maintaining cold water in hot weather and preventing freezing in winter.
-
Regular Filter Changes: We recommend regular filter changes to keep the unit running smoothly. If you’re experiencing prolonged freezing temperatures, it may be best to winterize the unit. This means draining all the water completely out of the unit and waiting until it warms up a bit to use your unit again.
- Use a Renu Therapy Filter Sleeve to keep the housing protected. Available for PURCHASE HERE.
- During colder months, set the temperature to 45°F to help prevent freezing in colder weather.
The Cold Stoic 3.0 and Aurelius are equipped with a heater element that provides freeze protection, making them capable of withstanding cold conditions. When used with the insulated cover, these units are well-suited for harsh weather and are ideal for colder climates. However, even with freeze protection, extreme weather may require the unit to be winterized, by following the steps below:
Winterizing Instructions – Aurelius
Drain the tank:
- Connect a drain hose to the hose spigot valve located on the drain pump in the mechanics bay, and run the end of the hose to a safe location.
- Using the touchscreen control, press the right arrow button, and select “Settings”. Scroll down and press the “HOLD” command to pause the circulation pump for 1 hour.
- Open the red handled ball valve on the drain pump piping, and turn on the drain pump power switch on the pump to start draining.
- After the water has drained about half way, open the rear or left side vent panel, and unscrew the blue filter housing using the included filter wrench. Turn the handle to the left to unscrew. Remove the filter cartridge and wash or replace as needed.
- Reach inside the tank and pop off the Primary Filter cover in the tank, and unscrew the blue Primary Filter Cartridge. Wash or replace as needed.
- When the tank is empty, turn the pump switch OFF to avoid burning out the pump, and close the red handled ball valve on the drain pump piping.
- Any remaining water may be removed with a towel or a wet/dry vac.
To fully winterize your Cold Plunge:
- Use a wet/dry vac to suck all water from the plumbing lines and chiller reservoir. Place the vacuum nozzle directly over the water return fitting in the tank until all water is removed.
- Remove both Primary and Secondary filter cartridges and store away. Replace the filter housing onto the cap loosely.
- Be sure all valves in the circulation plumbing are open.
- Unplug the unit from the wall outlet.
Getting Your Tank Back Up and Running After the Winter
- Replace new clean filters into the filter housing and reattach the filter housing (tight enough not to leak but not so tight you can't remove it again).
- Be sure all circulation valves are in the open position, and all drain valves are closed.
- Fill unit with water.
- Plug in and turn unit on and check for leaks.
- Set desired temperature.
⚠️ Disclaimer: Cracked components are not covered by the warranty due to freezing over. It is the customer’s responsibility to prevent the unit from freezing over.
